Material Innovation

Why Leading Brands Choose Ramie for Summer Dresses

High-end summer collections often struggle with the compromise between natural breathability and polished aesthetics. Our engineered ramie eliminates this trade-off, offering a high-performance alternative that bridges the gap between raw nature and luxury refinement.

  • Superior Climate Mastery

Outperforms cotton in moisture dissipation, staying significantly cooler and drier in tropical humidity.
  • Refined Tactile Comfort

Eliminates the traditional linen scratch, delivering a smoother feel with superior resistance to creasing.
  • Structural Resilience

Superior silhouette retention compared to silk, ensuring a durable, premium-tier semi-lustrous finish.

What Is Ramie Dress Fabric?

Ramie is a natural, renewable fibre from the nettle family, with a history of use in East Asia going back thousands of years. Sometimes called “Chinese linen” or “grass linen”, it shares some of linen’s rustic charm, but with its own performance profile.

  • Exceptional breathability and moisture management

It absorbs moisture quickly and releases it fast, helping the body stay cool.

  • High strength

Ramie fibres are naturally strong, supporting long-lasting garments that keep their structure.

  • Natural sheen and subtle texture

The fabric surface has a gentle lustre and fine slub texture, which reads as “premium” to the eye and hand.

Advanced analytics
Breathability & moisture
Excellent moisture uptake and release; stays cool and dry next to the skin.
Very breathable but can feel rough before repeated washing.
Comfortable but less effective at moisture management in hot, humid climates.
Handfeel on skin
Soft and smooth enough for close-to-skin dresses.
Can be stiff or scratchy, especially in higher weights.
Soft but may lack the crispness and “structure” some designs require.
Wrinkle behaviour & shape
With liquid ammonia and enzyme finishes, shows significantly improved wrinkle recovery versus traditional ramie and many linens.
Wrinkles easily and keeps those creases, which is not always desired in office or occasion dresses.
Moderate wrinkle behaviour but can lose shape over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Contact support
  • Is ramie dress fabric scratchy like traditional ramie?

Traditional ramie fabrics often feel stiff and scratchy because of basic or incomplete finishing. Our ramie dress fabrics go through liquid ammonia and enzyme treatments that relax the fibre structure and smooth the surface. The result is a soft, comfortable hand that you can confidently use for close-to-skin dresses, not just outer layers.

  • Will ramie dresses wrinkle easily?

All natural cellulosic fibres will wrinkle to some degree, but modern ramie finishing can significantly improve wrinkle recovery compared with untreated ramie and many linens. In practice, most dresses made from our ramie fabrics need only light steaming or ironing to look presentable, even after a full day of wear.

  • How is shrinkage controlled?

Shrinkage is one of the main concerns in dress production. Our ramie dress fabrics are pre-shrunk and tested to keep shrinkage at or below 3% after multiple washes, following ISO 5077. We can provide guidance on pattern allowances and recommend pre-washing protocols where needed.

  • Why is ramie dress fabric more expensive than regular cotton or basic linen?

High-quality ramie fibre, advanced finishing like liquid ammonia, and rigorous testing all add cost compared with commodity fabrics. However, they also enable higher retail pricing, better customer satisfaction and reduced production waste. Many buyers find that while the fabric price per metre is higher, overall profitability improves once they factor in reduced claims, stronger perceived value and longer product life.

  • Can you work with lower MOQs for small or new brands?

For custom colours, we have to respect a minimum to ensure dye lot stability and reasonable costs, which is why we start from around 500 m per colour. For smaller runs, we encourage brands to begin with stock colours, where the minimum is around one roll per colour. This allows you to test designs and markets before committing to custom development.

  • Can you develop special colours, patterns or jacquards?

Yes. We can work on brand-specific colours and, for certain constructions, on special textures or jacquard patterns. These projects normally require higher MOQs than solid colours and more development time, but they can deliver a unique ramie story for your brand.
